Absinthe 5 String Bass Long Scale Matte

The Bootlegger Absinthe Bass sports a modern design with some interesting features. First of all, the single monorail bridge design offers an individual bridge saddle and tuner for each string. By each string having it’s own individual bridge and saddle, theoretically the string connects better to the body enhancing punch and sustain. The mechanism captures the ball end of the string, and the string is tuned to pitch with a thumb wheel. The opposite end of the string is locked down at the end of the fingerboard with Bootlegger’s locking mechanism using an Allen wrench. The bass is headless, so this works well. Setting the bass up to my playing style was easy.

The body on my Absinthe is Ash, a tad heavy, but not too bad, with a matte finish. The neck is a laminated maple with a Rosewood fingerboard and a bolt on design. The truss rod operates flawlessly and neck relief was easily adjusted. As a 5 string, 35 inch scale, the B string is tight and focused and sounds great. I am mainly a 4 string guy, but the neck feels comfortable with adequate string spacing, and fairly flat at about a 13 inch radius.

The electronics are nicely done, with EMG active pups with a volume, volume, tone layout and a barrel jack. I upgraded mine with an EMG harness of volume, blend, and stacked treble and Bass control and had plenty of room to do so in the control cavity. The bass plays and sounds great, and can cover any style of music you play, either fingers, slap, or pick style.
